Thorvald stauning (1873–1942). Prime minister from 1924–1926 and again from 1929–1942. The portrait is from 1943 and painted by martin kaalund-jørgensen. In the picture we see the older stauning, who was also known as the father of the country, after he had carried out a series of major social and cultural reforms in the 1930s. In the 1935 election, where the campaign slogan was "stunning or chaos", he achieved the best election yet for the social democrats, receiving over 46% of the vote. The painting gives roughly the image of stauning that younger generations have of one of the greatest politicians of the 20th century: the father of the country, who looks out with both a serious and friendly face. Date: 1943.
