cf. Hoffbauer and a. Bonnardot: paris through the ages, paris, 1875-1882, 3rd delivery, texts by e. Fournier, lithogarphy of e. Cicéri; reed. Sand and tchou, paris, 1982, t. 1, p. 231. A fortress from 1202, the corner tower encloses the enclosure of philippe auguste on the seine side in 1200 which joins that of charles v in 1356 at the salle de l'engin, the date when the quay takes its name (see title). Of the two entrances to the louvre, the one on the river side overlooks what will be rue de l'auteriche or austria. Gradual disappearance of the fortress: card7909 (1622), card06222 (1663), card07927(1739) and d. 8169 (tgc). Read j. Hillairet (op. Cit. Card03333), t. 1, p. 61-77.
