The 'captain of god's army' appears to joshua near jericho. Above them the heavens open from which cherubs fly. On of them is holding a snake biting its own tail as the symbol of eternity. Joshua is depicted wearing a suit of armor holding a sword and a shield in his hands. Part of five paintings that served as wall hangings of the achterzaal (back room) of nieuwegracht 6 in utrecht. Of the sixth wall hanging by jan van bijlert only a fragment remains, now in the centraal museum in utrecht. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: between 1660 and 1663.
