iconographic description:
the scene takes place in a mask ball during the carnival. The costumes and masks, as well as a vague legend, make the identification of certain characters uncertain. On the left, the "president of the wigs", in a magistrate's robe bordered with ermine and a lion's head, could be jean-charles persil, minister of justice. He walks with the "president of the grocers" perhaps georges humann, minister of finance or tanneguy duchâtel, minister of commerce. The "marshal de clysso-bo-bo" - georges mouton, count of lobau - discusses with the "minister foutriquet" - adolphe thiers. The "caricature" disguised as a monk whose hood is topped with feathers and bells points to "presumptive cucumber" - the duke of orléans wearing a false nose. In the background, a figure with a pointed hat, wearing a costume marked with a crowned pear and a baquette in his hand, is not mentioned in the legend. The central group is made up of liberty masked and wearing a phrygian cap and a character with a cockade hat, false nose, one-eyed headband and vest decorated with pears which evokes louis-philippe in robert macaire. The explanation invites us to recognize pierre-louis roederer (1754-1835), author of the pamphlet "address of a constitutionalist to the constitutionalists", in which he defended the personal prerogatives of the king. The next group includes "marmitalivet" - camille bachasson, count of montalivet - in military uniform, accompanied by his "little simpleton from mamoura" [?] and the "subsidized press no doubt, disguised as an alpine shepherdess", according to the explanation. Against the wall on the right, talleyrand, seated between the busts of napoleon and charles x, is on a pallet. “we strongly suspect him of being an old worn-out political bambocher, but still running the charade,” is written in the caption. Person / character depicted:
thiers, adolphe; louis-philippe i, king of the french; macaire, robert (literary character); bachasson, marthe camille, count of montalivet; roederer, pierre-louis, count; parsley, jean-charles; talleyrand-périgord, charles-maurice de; orléans, ferdinand-philippe d', duke; mouton, georges, count of lobau
