Saint Dominic of Silos enthroned as bishop, Bartolomé Bermejo

Saint Dominic of Silos enthroned as bishop, Bartolomé Bermejo

The work represents santo domingo de silos enthroned as bishop, and is the central panel of the altarpiece of santo domingo de silos in the parish of daroca, in the province of zaragoza. The saint appears dressed as a bishop and seated on a gothic throne decorated with polychrome statues of the seven virtues, the theological ones: faith, hope and charity and the cardinal ones: prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. Particularly noteworthy is the extreme realism of saint dominic's face and the strength of his gaze, typical characteristics of flamenco art that, in this case, are not true but ideal, since it was in the 11th century when the monk domingo founded, near burgos, the monastery of silos, where he lived. This realism contrasts with the abundant use of gold which, as specified in the contract, does not appear embedded, as is customary in aragon. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: between circa 1474 and circa 1477. Place of creation: Spain. Dimensions: height: 242 cm (95.2 in); width: 130 cm (51.1 in). Medium: oil on panel. Depicted People: Dominic of Silos. Collection: Museo del Prado. Bartolomé Bermejo 001
