Preliminary sketch for pl 8 of "industry and idleness" (1747), "the industrious 'prentice grown rich, and sheriff of london"; large hall with sheriff's banquet in progress, guests seated around three sides of the room, to right, a beadle, and a crowd of petitioners, on walls, a musicians' gallery, statue and two portraits pen and brown ink and brown and grey wash, over slight red chalk and graphite verso: powdered with grey chalk and indented and pricked for transfer.
