A light cruiser, probably HMS 'Southampton' , and destroyers off a coast RMG PW1439, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1914
A light cruiser, probably hms 'southampton' , and destroyers off a coast
signed by the artist, lower right. This fully finished watercolour shows ships making passage along what may be the scottish coast, and passing a low-lying lighthouse. The light cruiser is one of the 'chatham' class and probably the 'southampton'. The rig at least corresponds to that ship's in 1914-16. The destroyers appear to be of the 'acasta' (k)-class that formed the 4th destroyer flotilla of the grand fleet from 1914 to late summer 1916. Date: circa 1914. Dimensions: 297 mm x 463 mm. Collection: Fine art.
