Imaginary portrait of king alfonso x of castile (1221-1284). He was the son of king ferdinand iii of castile and queen beatrice of swabia. He reigned between the years 1252 and 1284, when he died. Upon the death of his father, ferdinand iii, he resumed the offensive against the muslims, occupying the cities of jerez de la frontera (1253) and cádiz (c. 1262). In 1264 he had to face an important revolt by the mudejars of murcia and the guadalquivir valley. As the son of beatrice of swabia, he aspired to the throne of the holy roman empire, a project to which he dedicated more than half of his reign without achieving any success. The last years of his reign were especially gloomy, due to the succession conflict caused by the premature death of his first-born son, the infante fernando de la cerda, and the minority of his children, which led to the open rebellion of the infante sancho, second son of alfonso x, and a large part of the nobility and cities of the kingdom. Alfonso alfonso x is also recognized for the literary, scientific, historical and legal work carried out by his royal office. Alfonso. Object Type: painting. Date: between circa 1892 and circa 1894. Dimensions: height: 179 cm (70.4 in); width: 104 cm (40.9 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: León City Council. Alfonso X el Sabio (Ayuntamiento de León)
