The central panel shows the cross to which christ has been nailed on a rocky plateau. Christ is flanked by the two murderers, whose crosses are turned towards him. Mourning angels float around him. Mary magdalene kneels at the foot of the cross and on the left mary is supported by john. Two women and a grieving couple stand around the cross of christ. Behind the crosses are depicted several horsemen and a crowd of soldiers. Among them the soldier with the lance and sponge. On the right, soldiers fight over the garment of christ. Jerusalem can be seen on the left in the mountainous landscape. The buildings are partly inspired by the architecture in rome. Trajan's column can be distinguished on the left in the distance. On the right in the cityscape is the pyramid of sestius. The rocky mountain landscape continues on both side panels. The left panel shows the carrying of the cross. Christ is helped by simon of cyrene. A soldier puts the crown of thorns on his head. Christ focuses his gaze on the viewer. In the center plan two horsemen and jerusalem in the background. The risen christ is depicted on the right panel. He stands with the cross banner on the open grave and becomes surrounded by a mandorla. In the foreground two sleeping soldiers. To the left of the grave opening two soldiers running away. The back of the left side panel shows christ kneeling in the garden of olives. An angel floats above him with a chalice in his hand. In the left foreground three sleeping disciples, including peter with his sword. On the right two carthusian monks kneel. Their gaze is directed to the right. To the right of the tree judas, who points out christ to the soldiers following him. On the outside of the right side panel, christ is tied to a column in a gallery. He is flogged by two executioners. The judge pulls christ's head down by the hair. Several men ('pharisees') are watching all around. Through the gate with a coffered ceiling there is a view of a staircase with three figures at the top. A building in the background on the right. Date: between 1530 and 1539.
