"the manner in which nani presented himself in front of that port was dignified, ordering the bey that if within a short period of days he had not adequately compensated the venetians for the damage, he would carry out the massacre of those places and those coasts. The threat was not idle words; because nani could easily have obtained the effect of his threats. The bey of tripoli was therefore frightened and went aboard the admiral's ship himself and soon agreed to the conditions imposed on him. ". Date: 2 January 1863.
