Clay Monument New Orleans Horse Tram Trovatore, William Henry Jackson

New orleans, late 1890. Mule drawn tram at henry clay monument, canal street & st. Charles. Note visible details: paper advertisement on streetcar for performance of trovatore at the french opera house featuring mr. (paul antoine) ceste. "eugene robinson's museum & theater, performances hourly" in middle of 700 block of canal. Image discussed at shorpy. Com; see for some more information. Per local papers, "il trovatore" ran at the french opera house from 22 october 1890 through 28 january 1891, with apparently a single encore performance on sunday 1 march 1891. (these are the local performances within the possible dates of the photo; il trovatore or "le trouvère" (french language version) had played repeatedly at the french opera house decades earlier, including being a regular favorite in the 1856-60 seasons. ). Date: c. 22 October 1890 - 1 March 1891 (see description for details).
