Wilhelm bendz in a letter to his fiancee marie raffenberg, dated 26 august 1832: "at this time i am painting a life-size knee-piece, portrait of the history painter kaulbach. There were a number of poor portraits exhibited in winter, which, however, made a lot of money, so i thought you should show them something of a different kind and chose him because he has an exceedingly lovely head, which will naturally contribute a lot to the effect it will make. I will get a historical composition from him for it, which he will bring me next year when he comes to rome. I have painted him with a cape and pointed hat with a wide brim around it, as the old painters used, and behind it a sunset brilliantly painted by morgenstern. " (quoted after marianne saabye, wilhelm bendz, 1996, p. 224). Kaulbach executed two drawn portraits of bendz in 1831 and '32 (kks, tu 113, 1 & 2; cf. Marianne saabye, wilhelm bendz, 1996, cat. 119 & 121). The background landscape is identified as the mountains near partenkirchen, where the painter was with morgenstern in the spring of 1832 (cf.
