caricature. Five priests whose robe and hairclip take the shape of the candle snuffer. One of them is holding a paper with the inscription "conservative" and another is holding a paper with the inscription "drape / white". Background with hills. Historical commentary:
under the restoration, the extinguisher was a caricature motif very popular in liberal circles. The editors of the newspaper le nain jaune (1814-1815) imagined ridiculing the men in power and the supporters of the clergy by awarding them the order of the extinguisher, denouncing the obscurantism and blindness of royalist circles. This lithograph is one of the rare works by devéria with an anticlerical and satirical spirit. Mode of acquisition: legacy
