Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-12-04) letter no. 298 (1944-12-11) next letter (1944-12-14) envelope: front back text [in 1941 i was] in the hospital in kaluga, just outside moscow, in 1942 in a quiet position in russia, in 1943 in warsaw and this time i can even spend it at home. How happy and grateful we must be anyway. I am too, although i would much rather be at home with you. I have saved a nice birthday surprise for tomorrow, it is your registered letter that arrived yesterday. I want to open it tomorrow morning and enjoy it. I have also saved some cake, which i will eat with coffee, that will be my birthday breakfast. Now i'm 24, how quickly time flies, i don't feel that old yet, thank goodness, i can't even imagine it. Doesn't it seem strange to you that your "little hansl" is slowly becoming an "old man"? other mothers are already mothers-in-law or grandmothers when their sons are that age, but that is and probably won't be the case for you in the foreseeable future. We still have time for both, right! - so, my mamschl. Now i'll finish and sleep into my birthday. But i must quickly tell you that i love you very much. Warm regards and kisses from your hansl. Date: 11 December 1944.
