Der Alchimist, Carl Spitzweg, After 1860

Der Alchimist, Carl Spitzweg, After 1860

In this fanciful scene of an alchemist's workroom, a bespectacled alchemist leans over to examine the contents of a bubble-like glass receiver. At left, an enormous alembic sits distilling over a furnace, extending a long glass tube for the receipt of its vapors. The humble, plain room and the alchemist's coarse, ill-fitting robe provide an atmosphere of hermetic simplicity. Object Type: painting. Date: After 1860. Dimensions: height: 36 cm (14.1 in) ; width: 38 cm (14.9 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Science History Institute. Der Alchimist - DPLA - 42c9b01f21991ad904b3e77457891769
