Historical commentary: the print depicts the moment just before the execution of lady jane grey, heir to edward vi, proclaimed queen of england at the age of 16 in july 1553, deposed nine days after her coronation and beheaded at the tower of london on the orders of mary tudor, also a claimant to the throne. She is nicknamed, due to the brevity of her reign, the “nine-day queen”.
