'iron duke'-class battleships at scapa flow, 1917-18
a study of warships in scapa flow at sunset, with a balloon floating above to the right. It has been given a pencil frame, propably for reproduction, with the word 'scapa' inscribed in the bottom right corner, though not apparently in wyllie's hand. The ships are two 'iron duke'-class battleships, with a cruiser in the distance between them. It is possible that the 'iron duke'-class on the right is intended to be the 'emperor of india', which is known to have been equipped to hoist a kite balloon. Date: 1917. Dimensions: 253 mm x 353 mm. Collection: Fine art.
