Johannes driesch: the potter and his guardian angel. The german bauhaus carpenter, furniture designer and university lecturer erich dieckmann (1896–1944) is symbolically depicted as a potter (material and form designer), with his wife katharina, née ludewig, with a small child on the right. The strong christian reference of the picture with a guardian angel holding his hand over dieckmann's head, symbolizing his protective function, and the fact that dieckmann's war-injured left arm is depicted in a very active, shaping and designing function are striking. His left forearm was torn to pieces by a war wound, was replanted and painstakingly rebuilt through implants. A connection can therefore be assumed between the guardian angel and the known physical limitation. The painting was created by the artist in oil on canvas and measures 195 x 95. 7 cm in the original frame. In the lower quarter of the painting there are two tears from around 2005 at the latest, which have been properly restored by specialists. The painting was owned by katharina dieckmann, was offered by the berlin gallery nierendorf in 1974 and went to a private collection in southern germany. It was exhibited in 1930 by the anger museum in erfurt as part of the memorial exhibition johannes driesch - paintings, drawings, graphics.
