Armoury in the Jan Matejko House – museum exhibition from the early 20th c., Jan Matejko, circa 1904

The photo shows a fragment of the interior of the so-called the armory in the matejko house in krakow. In the artist's family home, thanks to the efforts of the society named after him, the first biographical museum in poland was established, the aim of which was to document the life and work of jan matejko, as well as to popularize knowledge about his achievements. In 1898, a museum exhibition was opened to visitors, covering the rooms on the first floor of the tenement house, i. E. The living room, the bedroom and the so-called the armory, prepared by combining the former matejko dining room and the adjacent narrow room of teodora - the artist's wife. In the following years, the exhibition was expanded to include rooms on the second floor and a studio on the third floor of the front building. Initially, the armory displayed various artefacts from jan matejko's collection: mainly military items, examples of artistic crafts, but also elements of fabrics, costumes, and plaster casts of sculptures using wooden display cases or boards attached to the walls. The appearance of the exhibition at that time is documented in the discussed photograph. It was probably made around 1904 (hypothetical dating) by antoni pawlikowski's photographic workshop in kraków, as evidenced by the dry stamp in the lower left corner of the black and white print. Then the society of jana matejko transferred the created museum to the commune of krakow under the temporary management of the national museum in krakow. In 1908, the deed of donation became its 3rd branch with the reservation: "to maintain the current purpose and character of the jan matejko house forever. " (agnieszka zagrajek). Date: circa 1904. Dimensions: height: 23 cm (9 in); width: 29 cm (11.4 in). Medium: photograph. Collection: National Museum in Kraków. Antoni Pawlikowski - Armoury in the Jan Matejko House - MNK IX-IF-933 (359904)
