Iconographic description: a man comes forward with two young women in his arms. One has her eyes downcast, the other who wears a purple shawl on her arm looks towards the sky. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "madame schontz moaned about the rarity of capable people, when couture himself presented her with a provincial who found himself furnished with the two handles by which women take these kinds of jugs when they want to keep them. To sketch this character, it will be to paint a certain portion of today's youth. Here the digression will be history. " [excerpt from béatrix, by honoré de balzac] themes / subjects / places represented: subject of society, morals, walker institution: maison de balzac inventory number: bal91. 126. Date: Unknown.
