In the background on the left, the crowd rushing by, and to the right, members of the national guard (with goat heads). Allusion to the episode of lobau dispersing bonapartist demonstrators in may 1831 with fire hoses. The blade of his sword seems to be replaced here by a clyster syringe. The explanation of pl.
