Gill gave this description of the work: 'gunner officers correcting their battery fire by field telephone from a disused trench in no man's land' image: three royal artillery observation officers survey battery fire on a battlefield from a trench in the foreground. One officer sits in the trench using a field telephone whilst the two other officers observe the artillery fire by looking out over the lip of the trench. There is a bomb-damaged tree beside them to the left and the battlefield is undulating as a result of previous artillery fire, with further trees to the right. Puffs of smoke indicate where the artillery shells are falling. All is set against a cloudy sky apart from two horizontal bands of bright blue sky. Date: 1919 (First World War).
