On may 30, 1893, the statue of jan pietersz coen on the rode steen was unveiled in hoorn amid great public interest, in the presence of representatives of the council of ministers, the provincial government and the municipal council. The hoornsche courant, predecessor of the nhd, contains articles and reports about the preparation and the day of the unveiling, which contain a lot of interesting information about the social context of the end of the nineteenth century.
