The egyptian campaign is the military expedition to egypt led by general bonaparte and his successors from 1798 to 1801, in order to seize egypt and the orient, and thus block the route from india to great britain as part of the fight against the latter. It was in fact one of the powers to maintain hostilities against revolutionary france. It doubles as a scientific expedition, with numerous historians, botanists and designers accompanying the army in order to rediscover the riches of egypt. It is therefore sometimes also called the "egyptian expedition", when its scientific, less martial side is considered. On may 19, 1798 (30 floréal year vi), immediately after the arrival of the monetary treasure looted in bern, the french expeditionary force left toulon, but ships accompanied them from marseille, genoa, ajaccio, civitavecchia. In total more than 400 ships take part in this fleet, as well as 40,000 men and 10,000 sailors. The fleet first captured malta on june 11, then landed at alexandria on july 1. One of the most famous battles of this campaign is the battle of the pyramids which took place on july 21, 1798. Date: circa 1870.
