The basel city doctor and professor of medicine felix platter the younger (1536–1614) with exotic plants and ancient ruins. Platter was known throughout europe as a collector of antiques and other scientifically valuable objects. He also had his own botanical garden and was one of the first scientists to create a herbarium. The painting is in the regenzzimmer of the kollegienhaus of the university of basel.
