35. 4 x 27. 8 cm.;14 x 11 in. Royalist conspirator john penruddock was an english colonel who fought during the english civil war. He is best known for being the leader of the penruddock uprising in march 1655, one of a series of royalist revolts organised by the sealed knot, an underground royalist organization intended to restore charles ii to the throne of england. There were plans to seize salisbury, newcastle, york and winchester and to instigate smaller uprisings in nottinghamshire and cheshire, however most of their attempts were quickly suppressed or even failed to take place as the protectorate had anticipated their intentions. Penruddock was captured and later beheaded alongside other ringleaders in exeter on 16 may 1655. Date: 17th century.
