Wellington, in his blue coat and white trousers, sits in a small gilt chair, registering melancholy alarm; behind him (right) a shadowy george iv, draped in a shroud, extends both hands towards rays descending from the upper right corner of the design. The king is partly surrounded by clouds. From behind clouds the dukes of cumberland and clarence, standing together, look down angrily at the duke; the former holds a scourge, with serpents for lashes, the latter clenches his fist; both are wary as well as revengeful. Wellington, conscious of the king's fate, drops a baton from his left hand; his knees are drawn up, his toes touching the floor, his right elbow on his knee, his hand supporting his head. Nov 20 1829
