Stamp of the german "protektorat böhmen und mähren" (= protectorate of bohemia and moravia); 1939; definitive stamp drbm michel no. 26; the stamp motive shows a view to "karlštejn" (german: "burg karlstein"; czech also: "karlův týn") in the near of prague. This castle was begun to built as hill castle in 1348 on order of the then roman-german king karl iv (charles iv) (the coronation to the emperor took place firstly in 1355) as vault for the imperial insignia of the "holy roman empire of german nation" and for the collection of reliquies of karl iv.;the castle wall averages 4 m thick, on the northern side 7 m.;the main building of the castle is the "chapel of the holy cross" (built 1348-1365) with a gothic vault, painted by the then court painter "master theodorik of prague" and illustrates the "angelic hosts".;the castle is located near the little river "budňanský potok" (contemporary name) and has no natural well.;the water (from the little river and rain water) was collected in a cistern to which from the castle is directing a 4 m long duct.;this is a real weak point of this castle and was hold secret always (until today).;the castle has experienced a very changeful history.;the contemporary view is mainly a result of a reconstuction of the castle in 1887-1899 after plans of the then architects friedrich von schmidt (1825-1891) and josef mocker (1835-1899).;the protectorate "bohemia and moravia" was erected at.;the initial stamps issued from the government of this protectorate were valid until to the (also accepted as mixed frankings). After could only still used the stamps of the german empire or own stamps which were issued from the government of the protectorate.
