iconographic description:
genre scene. Exterior scene: terrace of a café, fronts of a bookstore and a café "cafe [. . . ]e la r[. . . ]", two trees. Characters: in the center, two women, seated at a round table, have a drink. Two ramekins are placed on the table. A man brings a jug. On the right, we can see a large group made up of men and women. One of them uses his binocular. A beggar, who is breastfeeding her child and who is accompanied by her daughter, appears to be speaking to two women from this group. Three women wear hats topped with flowers according to the fashion of the years 1813-1814. The group on the left consists of a little girl and a woman looking at a young loving couple, perhaps newlyweds. The woman is holding a book. We can see a customer consulting a book in the bookstore. Historical commentary:
a priori considered as a composition for the charakterszenen aus dem leben in paris engraved in dresden in 1819 of which we have some line proofs and others colored. The duke of saxe-coburg is said to have owned the 24 original watercolors. Acquisition method: manual donation
