Emperor gosanjôin (1034-1073), the 71st emperor of japan, stands under a pine tree. The tales of the past (kojidan) is a brief account of japan's early history. With one poem: 'when the doors of heaven open at dawn, those who dwell above the clouds welcome the white plum blossoms like stars'.
