Hans niclas schwan was elected a member of the burgher estate at the riksdag that convened after the coup d'état in 1809, he was appointed by the riksdag to be the chairman of the estate and was appointed by his fellow citizens to the secret committee, which dealt with the questions of the succession to the throne, the peaces and the fate of the deposed royal house. He was the speaker of the bourgeois state also at the riksdags in 1812, 1815 and 1823; at the latter, the estate had a commemorative coin minted in his honor. In the years 1810-28, he was banking representative. As an energetic and highly regarded man, he was called in 1828 to be a member of the king's council and was the first unsaved person to be appointed to such a post.
