A view of the harbour of Copenhagen seen from the redoubt at Toldboden. At Nyholm the frigate Rota is readying its sails and the corvette for midshipmen training is being hauled out., Frederik Theodor Kloss, 1838
The painting shows the frigate rota getting ready for one of its very few commissions. The corvette being towed must be the flora, which served as training ship for midshipmen in 1838. The painting was bought by bertel thorvaldsen after the charlottenborg exhibition of 1839 and it might have influenced his decision that the rota was actually the vessel that brought him - and his collections - back from italy to denmark in 1838. Object Type: painting. Date: 1838. Dimensions: height: 34 cm (13.3 in); width: 50.3 cm (19.8 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Thorvaldsen Museum.
