The Grand Triumvirate, or Champions of liberty, William Hogarth, between 1762 and 1763

Satire attacking william hogarth and lord bute and supporting john wilkes; their portraits in oval cartouches. Wilkes, on the left, holds the north briton, no. 17 (that attacked hogarth) and no. 45 (where he indirectly attacked the king, see bm satires 4029); in the frame surrounding the portrait are the cap of liberty and magna carta. In the centre, bute with a book alluding to the excise on cider and perry; a scourge, chain and thistles in the frame. On the right, hogarth in profile (taken from his "gate of calais" (paulson 180) drawing wilkes (see paulson 214), the frame including heads of folly and envy; the artist's dog standing at the top holding a string that runs down to hogarth's palette on which is lettered "line of beauty". Acrostick verses below support wilkes and attack bute and hogarth. Etching. Date: between 1762 and 1763. Dimensions: Height: 233 mm; Width: 319 mm. Medium: paper. Depicted People: William Hogarth.
