The star gazer; an ugly old man sitting in a high-backed chair, wearing a dressing gown, cap and slippers, looking in stupid awe through an enormous telescope set up in front of his window at right; at his feet, two globes, a cat seeking his attention, a compass and quadrant, and various large volumes, one open at pages of runes; leering busts of old men set up in wall niches; in the bedroom, seen through an open door at left, his young wife is willingly ravished by her lover.
