The photograph shows jan matejka (1838 - 1893), a painter, an outstanding representative of historical painting, a teacher and director of the school of fine arts in krakow, a pioneer of monument conservation, an expert on polish history and culture, a member of many scientific societies and artistic and social associations. A mature man was photographed in a standing position, with his back against a stone balustrade, in a ¾ figure shot. He is dressed in a dark suit with a vest. What draws attention is the slim face framed by longer hair, the slightly disheveled beard and, above all, the eyes - focused and piercingly directed straight ahead at the viewer. A dark figure emerges from a light background, the only accent of which is a blurred fragment of the balustrade. The photograph in the office format was taken in juliusz mien's studio in krakow. This is confirmed by the decorative print on the company's box, visible on the obverse: "j. Mien cracovie" and on the reverse in the upper left corner, a vignette in the shape of a painting palette with the text: "j. Mien cracovie sławkowska 31". The photograph was taken in the early 1890s (agnieszka zagrajek). Date: 1891. Dimensions: height: 14.2 cm (5.5 in); width: 10.3 cm (4 in). Medium: photograph. Collection: National Museum in Kraków.
