Faust tries to rescue marguerite (gretchen) whom he clasps in his arms, but she remains seated on a bench and refuses to leave the prison chamber, although her chains have been removed and lie on the floor; mephistopheles appears at the door to hurry them along as dawn is breaking. 1827 lithograph.
