in an anteroom, a crowd of employees wait. Sitting on benches, more or less sprawled or asleep, they wait to be able to enter through the open door in the background where several people are already crowding around. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists on numerous subjects in parallel, as we can see in the following extract: "-- you don't know me well, he said to the head of office, smiling at him. Friday evening, we will get along thoroughly. At the moment, i have to attend the audience, the minister is leaving it on my back today, because he is preparing for the chamber. But i repeat to you, rabourdin, do not fear anything. Rabourdin walked on. Slowly up the stairs, confused by the strange turn things were taking. He thought he had been denounced by dutocq, and he was not wrong: des lupeaulx had in his hands the state where he was judged so harshly and des lupeaulx was caressing his judge. Secretary-general.
