Title alludes to poem li sao "encountering sorrow" by qu yuan. The woman may be fu fei 虙妃(宓妃)aka luoshen 洛神, i. E. , a goddess of luo river (theory by fujikake shizuya); or the sibyl (巫咸) who foretold qu yuan may meet a virtuous lord to serve under (hosono masanobu). Others suggest identifying with the princess of the xiang (xiang jun) and the lady of the xiang (xiang furen) from a poem different from the title of the scrolls. [1]. Date: 1926.
