the works of mercy are devotional practices which are imposed on the faithful in search of their salvation, as a guide to moral and spiritual conduct. There are 7 of them, the number of perfection in the biblical tradition. The list was established around 1220: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, visiting the sick, visiting or redeeming prisoners, welcoming pilgrims or giving hospitality to strangers, clothing the naked, burying the dead.
