Cézanne created more than two hundred paintings, drawings, lithographs, and watercolors of bathing fi gures. Scholars continue to debate whether this seemingly obsessive repetition indicates the artist's intention to suggest pagan nudity, or christian baptism. Perhaps the images are devoid of narrative content altogether.
