Frontispiece of Milton’s Early poems, Charles Haslewood Shannon, 1896

The intricate border and frontispiece of milton’s early poems (vale press, 1896) were designed by charles ricketts, with his partner, charles shannon assisting in the cutting. Charles ricketts, in particular, had a strong influence on modern book design. The vale press active until 1904 was founded by ricketts in 1896, with the aim of printing the english classics in beautiful form. Early poems is the first book printed at the vale press and it shows the influence of william morris and the kelmscott press. Date: 1896.
