Clonard Basket William Wilde 1849, William Wilde

8th or 9th century small wooden basket of clonard, carved out of yawl wood; was found in 1839 in the kinnegad river at clonard. This drawing has been published by william robert w. Wilde in his book the beauties of the boyne, and its tributary, the blackwater, 1849 in dublin, page 67. The dating of this basket has been taken out of elizabeth hickey: clonard: the story of an early irish monastery 520-1202, isbn 0-95-34582-02, page 51. Hickey cites following work: ed susan young, the work of angels: masterpieces of celtic metalwork, sixth to ninth centuries, published by british museum in association with the national museum of ireland and national museums of scotland. Date: 1849.
