A young officer recounts his experiences in the mexican war of 1848 to a veteran of the american revolution. The persons represented are members of the artist's family: the old man is his great-uncle richard caton; his mother and father appear as the middle-aged couple, his elder sister as the young lady, and his brothers as the officers. Discernible on the walls of the baltimore parlor are a portrait of george washington by rembrandt peale and an engraving of john trumbull's signing of the declaration of independence (ca. 1776).
