Original label: "phot. U. Verlag v. Karl f. Wunder, hannover. " - "hannover. Königstraße. " - "529" photo from around 1900 by karl f. Wunder of the old railway bridge through königstraße to eilenriede. At the end of the street you can vaguely see the war memorial, where the gate of the "new house" in front of the music academy now stands. Königstraße was the first street to be built in the expansion of ernst-august-stadt beyond the railway lines planned by laves. The plan was not implemented until the 1850s, when in 1859 the city area was expanded fifteenfold with the incorporation of "vorstadt-hannover". From 1862 onwards the area around königstraße was called "georg-stadt" after king george v, while the area east of the schiffgraben was called "marien-stadt" after the queen. Laves planned königstraße as a north-eastern extension of theaterstraße, which leads to the opera. It was intended to form the backbone of a grid of streets with residential buildings crossing at right angles, bordering the railway line, bernstrasse, volgersweg and königstrasse. The original plan was to make the streets as wide as in ernst-august-stadt, but after the property owners objected, the street widths were reduced considerably. Only königstrasse was laid out as an "avenue" with rows of trees and from the 1860s onwards it was populated with upscale buildings and stylistic elements of the hanoverian school in combination with round-arch style and gothic forms, renaissance or romanesque elements. Today you can also find buildings from the decades around the turn of the century. In the photo we can see on the far right the entrance to the "tivoli" amusement park, an early tourist attraction with "electric light" and music events. The park was later increasingly narrowed by additional railway tracks and then completely abandoned. On the very left of the photo, an awning advertises the sale of "triumph brand boots" and cycling shoes, and here the only cyclist in the picture is examining his newly purchased bicycle. The tram in the middle of the picture is already electrified, while only a few horse-drawn carriages can be seen, as well as a large wheelbarrow on the right. Most of the people in the back part of the picture are strolling safely in the middle of the street. Date: before 17 April 1901 (gelaufen).
