plate 4 from a series of four plates entitled "the painter, the sculptor, the engraver and the printer". Marks, inscriptions, hallmarks:
letter - on the front, under the image, in the center, printed in black ink: "this figure shows you how we print intaglio plates,"; "made in etching by abosse in paris in lisle du palais in the year 1642, with privilege"; below: "the anchor is made of walnut oil, brusleé and wine black, the best of which comes from germany, the printer takes this anchor with a pad of linen, anchors his board a little / hot, wipes it after lightly with other linen, and finishes cleaning it with the palm of his hand, this done he puts this board to hassle on the table of his press, applies it on a sheet of paper / soaked and rested, and stitch this with a sheet of other paper and one or two langes, then by pulling the arms of his press he passes his table with its board between two rollers. Stamp - on the front, bottom right, in red ink: "ville / de / paris" (cf. Lugt suppl. 2012c). Stamp - on the front, lower left, in black ink: "carnavalet" (lugt 432d).
