Map of charleroi, currently in hainaut in belgium. 1693. Legend: plan of charleroy. Fortified city of the netherlands in the county of namur located on a height near the sambre. It was formerly a small town called charnoy that the spanish forged in 1666 and gave it the name charleroy because their king was called charles second. The french took it in 1667 and it was ceded to them by the peace of aix la chapelle 1668 the french returned it to the spanish by the peace of nimegue 1678 the marshal duke of luxembourg took it for the king in 1693. In amsterdam at pierre mortier's house. It is this engraving (or its original or copy) and its legend which served as a source for the plan engraved on the rear wall of the branch of the national bank of belgium in charleroi. The bank was located on quai du brabant, the rear facade rue léopold, facing rue puissant. The agency was bought at the end of 2005 by the city with the collaboration of the french community of belgium.
