Ministère de la Police générale - emblème, Pierre-Paul Prud'hon

Emblem of the ministry of general police. Alongside the gallic rooster personifying vigilance, an allegorical female figure is seated in an armchair whose arms represent two sphinxes, symbols of the secrecy of operations. She brandishes a torch in her left hand in order to dispel the darkness where crime lurks (the black cloud trying to envelop it). In her right hand, she holds the mirror of prudence in which a snake is reflected. On her chest, the head of medusa evokes the terror she inspires in the guilty. Date: fin XVIIIe-début XIXe siècle.
