The legend at the bottom of the engraving has been translated thus:
"sketch of a doctor of marseilles clad in cordovan leather equipped with a nose-case packed with plague-repelling smoking material. With the wand he is to feel the pulse. " (fletcher, p. 16). Date: before 1737; probably around 1721 (Fletcher, p. 16).
