José miguel de la carrera y verdugo (santiago, october 15, 1785—mendoza, september 4, 1821) was a chilean politician and military man. A hero of the emancipation of chile and a prominent participant in the wars of independence, he is recognized as one of the "fathers of the homeland of chile", head of government, the first general in chief of the army and the first leader in the republican history of said country, and one of the first in america.
