My beloved mother! i greet you today from the bottom of my joyful heart. I know that what i have to tell you will make you very happy and that a great worry will be lifted from my heart. I am now definitely and firmly on the intelligence course! i wrote to you about it before, but it wasn't yet completely certain. Yesterday we had an aptitude test with a cv and dictation of historical and political questions. Today i got the news that i passed. Now, listen and be amazed, the course lasts until june 10, 1944! so a quarter of a year! i could do something with you - it's a nice long time at home and in safety. As you know, i volunteered for this. But i would also have signed up for a shoemaker, tailor or field cook course and it wouldn't have mattered to me. I promised you that i would try everything possible. This time, without being called upon, i was a bit "lucky". I am now here in the castle barracks and on monday the story begins. In any case, it is much more interesting than stubborn infantry service and much easier and nicer. Tomorrow is heroes' day and it will be the second anniversary of the death of our dear dad.
